Cymro Posted 23 January , 2004 Share Posted 23 January , 2004 I'm not a bayonet man, but I do collect Welsh WW1 militaria - this is a Welsh Reg bayonet wrongly described as RWF. My question is - is this bayonet likely to have been used in the great war, or had they been totally overtaken by the P1907. The marks on the bay onet are a bit of a mystery beyond the issue date. Also, is there any significance in the khaki paint to the scabbard. In short, HELP, is there a knowledgable bayonet man out there who could shed a bit of light on this. Thanks a lot! Joe Sweeney Posted 23 January , 2004 Share Posted 23 January , 2004 Jonathan, 03 bayonets were used in the Great War. Occasionally, at the front along with the Long Lee Enfields. Fairly commonly as training issue for the whole war. In a regular Battalion like the 2nd Welsh it had been long replaced by the 07 Bayonet, however, it probably remained in Welsh Regiment stores. Cymro Posted 23 January , 2004 Author Share Posted 23 January , 2004 Thanks Joe, That makes sense - I suppose they pressed them into service when supplies were short. I'm trying to sort the stampings out from Howard Williamson's book, but no joy yet. Cheers Jonathan
