kevyn Posted 8 December , 2007 Share Posted 8 December , 2007 Can anyone help! I have been researching my family history to find that my grandfather served in the RFC/RAF between August 1916 to January 1919. I would like to find out which unit or squadron he served with. I have got his service record but there is very little information other than he was an assistant armourer and he did serve abroad during his service. With this scant info. is there any way forward? per ardua per mare per terram Posted 8 December , 2007 Share Posted 8 December , 2007 In the movements column there should be a list of the units that he served with since 1 April 1918. Unfortunately these are RAF records and they didn't always show service before amalgamation, but whether that was because that was where he'd served until then is not possible to judge. Those units are often abreviated, but people can interpret those and often locate where they were.

Have looked closer at the service document , to find I.A.R.D. service at home, in the Unit to Which column. Lower down this column Serial No. 4073 docs to ---- Pensions 30/1/19. In the Promotions/Description column he was transfered to the R.A.F. on 1/4/18. Would you have any idea what I.A.R.D. stands for? Cheers.
