Stephen Nulty Posted 23 January , 2004 Share Posted 23 January , 2004 Richard Assuming an age in the range of 16-36 when KIA, I did a “Person Search” on the 1901 census on W Wood. It came up with 16 potential matches, and two candidates in particular caught my eye. Name: W Wood Age: 6 Born: Staff, West Bromwich Civil Parish: West Bromwich Name: W Wood Age: 12 Born Staffs, Horton Civil Parish: Biddulph These are the only two entries for this name and age range in the Midlands area. Unfortunately, to see the address and family information you have to pay and I don’t have a current open voucher. Perhaps worth a visit yourself to www.pro.census.gov.uk Regards Steve
brindlerp Posted 23 January , 2004 Author Share Posted 23 January , 2004 Thank you very much Doug and Stephen. My great uncle William Wood is on the 1901 UK Census, aged 7, resident at 14 Lupin Street, Aston (Civil Parish), Nechells (Metropolitan Borough), Birmingham. This would give his year of birth as 1894. This area is next to Saltley, so I think it looks very promising, however I need more information to confirm it i.e. age, DOB, address and next of kin. I know two of his sisters (one my grandmother) lived in Saltley (key information, Doug, thanks!) during WW1. Another relative has William's memorial plaque, but nothing else, so we do not his service number or regiment. There are many WOOD W. and William's on the CGWC site. This was an obvious choice to start researching being the Royal Warwicks, but it is not certain. One elder brother Alexander apparently emigrated to Australia before WW1 and he fought in the Australian army on the Western Front, he survived but we do not have any more details than that apart from returning to the UK to live (this is going to be another difficult research project!). Another elder brother was a 'Trimmer' in the Engineering Crew of the RMS Titanic! Many thanks regards Richard
