Newland Posted 3 December , 2007 Share Posted 3 December , 2007 Does anyone know where I can find details of regiments, battalions, units that were stationed in Great Yarmouth during the Great War? I’m trying to trace a Robert Hudson (possibly with a middle initial of ‘W’) who came from Yorkshire (possibly Leeds), he was born sometime around 1890 (possibly 1886/7) and was married (presumably also in Yorkshire) before he Great War. He was stationed in Great Yarmouth sometime during the Great War, certainly during 1916. In Great Yarmouth he sired a child but then returned to his wife (presumably in Yorkshire) after the war. I know that he had died before 1943 and there is a rumour that he was an unofficial bookmaker. I’m hoping that if I can find what military units were stationed in Great Yarmouth I may be able to connect him with one from Yorkshire (Leeds). Greg Bloomfield Posted 3 December , 2007 Share Posted 3 December , 2007 A quick scan of the Medal Index Cards at the National Archives throws up nine Robert Hudsons with connections to Yorkshire regiments, although none with the initials R W. Pte Robert M Hudson 31812 West Riding Regiment Pte Robert H Hudson 1536 West Yorkshire Regiment Pte Robert F Hudson 12109 Yorkshire Regiment Pte Robert E Hudson 3627 Yorkshire Regiment Pte Robert Cyril Hudson 2786 West Yorkshire Regiment Maj Robert Arthur Hudson West Yorkshire Regiment Pte Robert Hudson 18262 Yorkshire Regiment Pte Robert Hudson 14269 East Yorkshire Regiment Pte Robert Hudson 57418 West Yorkshire Regiment There are plenty other 'Hudsons' with Robert in the name but not as a first initial with Yorkshire connections. As to whether any of these regiments had any of their battalions based in Yarmouth, hopefully one or other of the Forum's members with specialist knowledge of those regiments might be able to help you out. Good luck, as you (possibly!) might need it. Greg
fwwjournal Posted 4 December , 2007 Share Posted 4 December , 2007 My grandfather was stationed at Yarmouth and Lowestoft 1914-1916 before heading off to Palestine. He served on coastal defence in Norfolk with the Cheshire Yeomanry, Welsh Border Mounted Brigade, First Mounted Division. The Brigade was alloted the sector stretching from Gorleston at the southern part of Greater Yarmouth, to Southwold, 11 Miles south of Lowestoft. The Regiment's area included Gorleston and the coast immediately south it. I don't have details of who was based north of this area and into Yarmouth and beyond, but am guessing that it was other Bridgades from within the First Mounted Division. Have you tried the local record office? David
Newland Posted 4 December , 2007 Author Share Posted 4 December , 2007 Many thanks to ResearchPress and Greg Bloomfield for their help and suggestions. I now have some good ideas of where to look for the information I seek. Best regards, Newland
