AlanCurragh Posted 10 November , 2007 Share Posted 10 November , 2007 I was wondering whether any of our RFC experts might be able to provide me with any details on Captain McIlwaine's service or death. I've not been able to find anything on him at all so far. I'll be at Kew in a week or so, so will look at the AIR76 records then, but in the meantime, any assistance very gratefully received. Thanks Alan

mickdavis Posted 10 November , 2007 Share Posted 10 November , 2007 He was flying in RE8 B4040 with 2Lt WM Irvine on a patrol on the IV Corps Front. The squadron recvords give the crew as MIA - they were both killed. B4040 had been allotted to the Expeditionary Force on 22 December 1917 and initially went to 1 ASD. It passsed to 2 ASD on 18 January and was issued to 12 Sqn on 11 February. 12 Sqn also lost A3626 to ground fire that day (crew OK) and had B2273 damaged by EA with the observer wounded.
