I would be grateful if anyone has more information about Able Seaman Thomas Green (died 22nd August 1916) - desribed on CWG site as KW/760, Drake Bn RN Divn, Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve.

CAn anyone do a SDGW lookup for him please? (ie not sure if he is kia, dow or died)

Does anyone know what the battalion was doing around that time?

Many thanks for any help.

Regards,

Brendon.

SDGW does not list naval personnal I'm afraid. RN Div returned from Near East in mid-1916, and was renumbered 63 Div 19 July. So somewhere on the Western Front in August, but not the Somme, as Ray Westalke's "British Battalion on the Somme" does not record them there until October. Apologies - my refs can't help further.

Brendon,

After leaving the eastern Mediterranean, the RND arrived in France in May 1916

and became the 63rd (Royal Naval) Division

at the same time coming under the army's command structure instead of the Admiralty's

The first days on the Western Front were spent in training and reorganisation

e.g.; the division at last received some artillery of its own only at the end of July

Following the training period the division entered the fighting line on 17th July

taking over the Angres-Souchez sector from the 47th Division

"The divisional sector lay between Lens and the Vimy Ridge, through the ruins of two mining villages, Calonne and Angres, and thence southward across the Souchez river."

[from The Royal Naval Division by Douglas Jerrold]

You will probably get more personal details from the Jack Clegg Memorial RND Database. This used to be on the Miltary-Genealogy.com web-site but it seems to be missing from there now

Does anyone know where it is to be found today?

regards

Michael

John Morcombe has removed his database from that website. Its future is under consideration. This is what John has on AB Thomas Green, killed by the enemy but not in action:-

Kitchener W/760 Able Seaman Thomas Green RNVR;

3rd Field Company, Divisional Engineers (Drake Bn. attached 3rd Field Company, Divisional Engineers, Dug Out Platoon).

22/08/1916 he was killed by a shell falling on the Estaminet.

Enlisted as 13773 Private York & Lancs. Regt. 2/9/14-8/9/14 transferred to RNVR ; Drake Bn. 'D' Company MEF 1/3/15-20/7/16 attached 3rd Field Company Divisional Engineers Dug-out Platoon.

Bully-Grenay Communal Cemetery British Extension (FR 161).

CWGC has no record of his attachment to 3rd Field Company, Divisional Engineers ; Thomas MacMillan wrote (RND page 961-2):- "...killed by the shell which smashed the estaminet..." ; Drake Bn. 'D' Company 20/5/16 ; Listed on the Rotherham War Memorial in Clifton Park as GREEN. T.W. ; A Miner ; b.Rotherham 20/5/1892 ; Wife, Ellen, 83 Westgate Green, Rotherham. ; ADM/171 = St.V.B. issued to Mother.

The Jack Clegg Memorial Dbase will be back online with Findmypast.com & (hopefully) Ancestry.com by the end of this year.

Forum members have free access here anyway.
