kwebb Posted 4 November , 2007 Share Posted 4 November , 2007 Hi, first of all this is my first post on this site - this forum was recommended to me by somebody on the aerodrome website - so hello to everyone! I am trying to find out the service record of my G-Grandfather. This is the info I had passed onto me by my Grandmother (she is now dead, so I cannot ask anymore questions). He joined the RFC quite early in the war, I believe he was a sgt. (not an officer at least) and flew Pups (and possibly Camels). He was stationed in France at first then was posted to Scotland to train new pilots. He apparently knew Albert Ball (I do not know in what the connection was though). He survived the war. I think I have his service number which I believe was 5674. His name was Leonard Randall (he had a middle name but unfortunately I do not what it was). I have tried some of the internet resources (Ancestry, etc looking at WW1 British army pensions, etc) but cannot find anything. Any help/advice on how/where to obtain more information would be great. Many thanks, Kevin.
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 4 November , 2007 Share Posted 4 November , 2007 Welcome to the forum Kevin Some of the details can be confirmed, if this is him below. He joined and went to France in 1915, vaving already been promoted to Serjeant by 31/12/1915. This is his Medal Index Card, which probably shows his entitlement to a 1914/15 Star. You can download it for £3.50 online or for free at Kew and the FRC. Medal card of Randall, L G W Corps Regiment No Rank Royal Flying Corps 5674 Serjeant http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...p;resultcount=1 The RFC became the RAF on 1/4/1918 and their service records were stored seperately from the army ones. They are available offline at Kew in AIR 79 and are in service number order.

per ardua per mare per terram Posted 6 November , 2007 Share Posted 6 November , 2007 I forgot to say you can order copies of them (only 2, large sheets) online using 'shop online' on the NA web site.
