I am trying to locate or confirm that area that the Suffolk Regiment would have been in from June 1916.I think they might have been in the Pas de Calais area of France.I know that there were many casualties on 31st July and need to find out more if I can.

40th was as I am sure you know a Bantam Division. Weeding out of very under-sized or unfit men delayed the training programme, and it was not until late Spring 1916 that the Division was ready to proceed on active service. It moved to France between 1st and 9th June, and served on the Western Front throughout the war.

The Division served between June and late October 1916 on the Artois front near Loos, during which time it undertook first familiarisation with trench warfare on what was a relatively quiet front at this time.

The 40th Division took part in the Battle of the Ancre, a latter part of the 1916 offensive on the Somme.
