Remembered Today:

SDGW and CWGC

On another post I asked for details for George Joseph Hester on SDGW.

It gave a date of death as 26th April 1915, whereas, CWGC gives a date of death as 15th May 1915.

This has confused me - it doesn't take much, I know!

But I am confused. Why the different dates, and I suppose more importantly which date is correct???

I have come across this on occasions and believe that there is nothing sinister in what you read.

There are threads on the Forum that cover this under such guises as KiA and also reporting a death.

There are more learned people than me here who can tell you more, quite often the dates dont tally as there is no definitive moment when the person concerned was known to have died. In George Hester's case and if I remember I looked him up, the theatre of war may have a significance here.

Either date could be an error.

Email CWGC on casualtyenq@cwgc.org and ask if their date checks out with their original records. It could be a scanning or clerical error.

Their answer should confirm or amend their date at least.

To confuse you even further, you could check the respective medal roll(s). Depending on the unit, these sometimes give a date if the person died or was killed.
