lizard Posted 13 October , 2007 Share Posted 13 October , 2007 I have tried hard to find out about 3 brothers who seved in WW1 but have got very little and wondered if you could help me please. They were all born in Abingdon Berkshire. Thomas William Dance born 1892 served in the Royal Berkshire regiment and went to France. He enlisted August 1914 and was discharged in February 1919. William was born 1896 and was in 11th batt Royal Worcester Regiment and went to Solanika. Charles William was born 1879 and i cant find anything at all about him. Any info or advice would be really helpful. Kind Regards Lizard
MelPack Posted 13 October , 2007 Share Posted 13 October , 2007 Hello Lizard I am not sure precisely what material you already have but the starting point are the MICs: Thomas was transferred from the R. Berks to the Labour Corps: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...p;resultcount=1 There is A Charles W that served with the DLI and another 9 MICs for plain Charles Dance: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...Spec=score+desc and two Williams for the Worcesters but second name initials included and if he was in the 11th Battalion then it is the William T who ended up in the Labour Corps: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...mp;mediaarray=* Regards Mel

MelPack Posted 13 October , 2007 Share Posted 13 October , 2007 Sue If you download the MICs for Thomas and William and post them on this thread as the first step there will be information that can be interpreted. As John suggested, please have a thorough read of researching a soldier on the main site. Regards Mel
MelPack Posted 13 October , 2007 Share Posted 13 October , 2007 Sue Once you have downloaded the MICs, I suggest that you contact Ivor Lee to see if he has any information on the service of Thomas and William with the Labour Corps: http://www.geocities.com/labour_corps/ancestor.htm Regards Mel
MelPack Posted 14 October , 2007 Share Posted 14 October , 2007 Sue Thomas actually enlisted as Tom and did serve with 1/4th Battalion. The MIC that I pointed you to is for another Thomas Dance who also served with the R. Berks. You can follow Tom's experience through the online Battalion War Diary here: https://www.thewardrobe.org.uk/wardiary.php There is also a great selection of material in the collection on the 1/4th: http://www.thewardrobecollections.org.uk/i...tton=Select+all Hats off to the museum and the volunteers. lizard Posted 14 October , 2007 Author Share Posted 14 October , 2007 Thank- you all very much for all your help. Mel that is my grandfather in the photo and when he died my father was told he had some metal in his arm which they said could have been from a wound he got in the war. Im now going to sit and look at all that you have found for me. Once again thanks. Kind regards Lizard
MelPack Posted 14 October , 2007 Share Posted 14 October , 2007 Sue I am delighted that it is your grandfather. With the online War Diaries for both the 1/4th and 2/4th being available, the only element that is missing is the date of wounding and the transfer to the 2/4th. There are no records of the brothers in the Ancestry WO 364 series but it is still worth your while having the WO 363 Series checked at the National Archives in case you are part of the one in three lucky ones.
