The 1st Yorks and Lancaster War Diary entry for the 29th September 1915 in describing their attack around the Hohenzollern Redoubt area contains the following comment:

'In the meantime the Germans had advanced up the trench slowly and were assisted by gas fumes which emanated from a burning mop shaped apapratus which had been placed on our parapet.'

Anyone have any more details on this mop shaped apparatus?

I'm not at all sure about this. It could have been the German nebeltopf, described as "smoke-producing apparatus containing chlor-sulphonic acid and weighing 1.5

cwt. each (75kg if my maths serves me correctly)". I have never been able to track down a picture of same so cannot say whether it corresponds to the shape described.
