James,

As I understand it a Stoker/mechanic had a duel role. As a stoker he would feed a furnace with coal and as a mechanic would deal with mechanical repairs or maintenance, probably in the engine room. He would be assigned where the need was greatest.

Best wishes

David

James,

Stoker Mechanic rank ceased in 1907 he was the equivilent to what became a Stoker 1st class, competent to maintain and service Auxilliary Machinery. Incidently the rank was re-established in 1947 the equivilent to Stoker 1st Class.

An allotment is an amount of money paid to a Spouse/Mother or savings account the man never saw it it was sent from his pay office, his wife mother would have a book of tokens that she could exchange at a Post Office for the money.

Thanks Charles.

I thought the mechanic rank was open only to LS or PO only?

James,

The same jobs as an ERA, diagnostic and management, his promotion line is different in that he comes up the ranks from Stoker as opposed to being an apprentice. Specially selected and a long course, it extended the career structure of the Stoker Branch.
