Nigel Gordon Posted 6 October , 2007 Share Posted 6 October , 2007 Hi Pals, Could anyone confirm that the Princess Victoria and the SS Victoria are the same ship? I am researching my Grandfather and one is mentioned in the Divisional history and the other is in the Regiments history as the ship used to cross the channel May/June 1915. per ardua per mare per terram Posted 6 October , 2007 Share Posted 6 October , 2007 Without going beyond the first page on my google search I have found 2 different Princess Victoria's current for our period. The answer is that there would have been more than one of each named ship as well as varieties such as Victorian. In the Mercant Marine the restriction was one ship of the same port of registry with the same name.
historydavid Posted 6 October , 2007 Share Posted 6 October , 2007 Nigel, HMS Princess Victoria was a Fleet Messenger (hired) between 1914 and 2/5/15 then released, but may have been immediately re-hired for trooping. There were two SS Victoria sunk in 1917, one was 1,620 grt and the other 974 grt. Best wishes David
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 7 October , 2007 Share Posted 7 October , 2007 Princess Victoria (2) 1912 Stranraer-Larne, 1914-1919 troopship, 1934 scrapped. 1,678 Portpatrick & Wigtownshire Railways Joint Committee The Larne and Stranraer Steamboat Company operated sailings from 1872 and became the Portpatrick & Wigtownshire Joint Committee in 1890. The company became part of London Midland & Scottish Railway in 1923. http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/feeders3.html http://www.hjcards.co.uk/older.htm link to postcard of when she was in LMS service Princess Victoria (1902 - 1,943 gt) Canadian Pacific Line West Coast Local Services http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/CP5.html link to picture SS Victoria, if used correctly, implies that she was still a private Steam Ship, not in Admiralty hands at that time. And as David has noted, more than one could be current.
Nigel Gordon Posted 7 October , 2007 Author Share Posted 7 October , 2007 Thanks "per ardua per mare per terram" and David, much obliged to you both. My search of Google gave me hits for ships as far a field as Canada, Far East, Australia and even this one "PRINCESS VICTORIA, 1,108grt, 9 March 1915, 16 miles NW by N from Liverpool Bar LV, torpedoed without warning and sunk by submarine". I could find nothing for the ships operating out of Folkestone and Boulogne 31st of May - 2nd June 1915 and now with your help it is becoming reconciled. Thank you.
