centurion Posted 3 October , 2007 Share Posted 3 October , 2007 Captain B C Hucks was the inventor of the Hucks Starter a mechanical device, driven by a car engine and first introduced in 1917, which swung the prop. It was used on airfields and by airforces around the world up into the 1930s when engine size and compression made it impracticable. In the RFC/RAF service it was first based on a Ford chasis but other countries often used vehicles of local manufacture. It was normal practice for commissioned officers in the RFC to be released back to the aviation industry whilst retaining their rank. DeHaviland was released in this way as, it would seem, was Hucks. Their company was deemed to be their unit.
