Clio Posted 1 October , 2007 Share Posted 1 October , 2007 Hi all I plan to carry out some research on WW1 convoy routes around the coast of Britain. I have studied WW2 pilot books and charts covering the British coast from Kew, Portsmouth, RNHB, but seek to extend study to WW1. Greenwich seems a reasonable place to start. Can anyone out there recommend some primary sources ? kind regards
Lörscher Posted 2 October , 2007 Share Posted 2 October , 2007 Can anyone out there recommend some primary sources ? Hi Pam, althought I haven't seen these records, the following might have general informations on "routing" for those convoys. ADM 137 - 2640 (eastcoast convoy T.U. ...) ADM 137 - 2641 (eastcoast convoy M.T. ...) ADM 137 - 2642 (eastcoast convoy U.T. ...) ADM 137 - 2643 (eastcoast convoy U.M. ... and T.M. ...) Other convoy-routes (Atlantic) are dealt with in the same sequence of files. I have seen the relevant files for the "mediterranean-through"-convoys, they are very detailed for every single convoy... Also possibly: ADM 131 - 99 (French coal trade: convoy organisation; routes; escorts; defence; attack diagrams and convoys postarmistice) It might be a start... Lörscher Posted 3 October , 2007 Share Posted 3 October , 2007 I am really looking for info on the west coast Hmm, so you're looking for west coast "local convoys" ? Well, as they are not numbered... Sorry, no idea Maybe within the Auxiliary Patrol-files for the relevant area's ? Oliver
Clio Posted 3 October , 2007 Author Share Posted 3 October , 2007 Ages ago I saw some really old pilot books at Greenwich with coastal routes out of Liverpool and Glasgow and the Irish Sea. They had instructions and coordinates and all sorts. These books were issued to certain vessels, some in convoy some sailing alone. There were details on the controlled minefield passages too. At the time I was researching something else so did not examine them further. Now I think they may be of some interest.
Lörscher Posted 4 October , 2007 Share Posted 4 October , 2007 Maybe worth a look ? ADM 116/1389 War Navigational Instructions for merchant vessels. Routes for Western Trade (1915-1918) ADM 116/1390 War Navigational Instructions for merchant vessels. Routes for Western Trade (1918) Good luck !
