Black Jock Posted 24 September , 2007 Share Posted 24 September , 2007 I have been given information in the form of a newspaper article, from a pal, about a Thomas William Paterson. He enlisted in June 1915 as a piper in The Black Watch, age 16. Besides being a top class piper, Thomas was seriously interested in all forms of signalling, at which he became remakably proficient. The study of wireless telegraphy followed and after taking examinations in the subject, was appointed as an instructor at a school in Sandwich. From there he was posted to a "famous" Naval hospital ship" as a wireless operator. And, was eventualy commisioned as a Acting Lieutenant. Besides his military prowess he also was claimed a hero on two seperate occasions for saving people from drowning. One of the awards was the Croix de Guerre for saving a French Officer from drowning. The article is headed "Commision and Two Medals" . Held by Perth Youth of 16. Can anyone throw more light on this young man. I have looked for a medal card in vain, and can't find him in the London Gazette. Tom
historydavid Posted 24 September , 2007 Share Posted 24 September , 2007 Tom, a little good news; his name does NOT appear in the casualty record of the Admiralty. Best wishes David
