Remembered Today:

41st Brigade RFA - 2nd Division

I posted this on the researching soldiers section and was kindly told that this unit was part of the second division. I am hoping that someone may have access to a suitable history / diary.

“My fathers cousin Ernest Jubb was killed on new years day 1916. He was a private in the RAMC attending the 41st Brigade, 17th battery RFA. Would anyone know what type of battery this was and where it situated at the time. Perhaps someone has a war diary for this unit and could possibly look up what was happening on that day. One final question – does anyone know what 'attending' meant?”

Many thanks

Martin

As far as I can see there was not much happening on Jan 1st in this area (near CAMBRIN) - But there were some bombardments of some artillery units on the 2nd when the Germans blew some large mines ...this may be it ....the 36th Brigade diary - usually a near neighbour reported that after midday its billets and HQ were badly hit as well as the HQ of 19th Infantry Brigade AND the 41st Bde HQ was demolished by artillery fire .. .. 'there were about 20 casualties altogether '.. including the 41st Bde medical officer .. might this have been the occasion ? having had their HQ demolished there may have been some bureaucratic confusion at 41 Bde in its aftermath .. which might explain a wrong date recorded for Pte Jubb??.. I am sure the 41 Bde diary can tell you more
