283 Siege Battery RGA

I have a pamphlet/diary for the 283 Siege Battery RGA which i believe was published privately by the Battery's C/O just after the war and sent to each surviving member of the Battery. It contains a brief description of the Battery's whereabouts and activities throughout the war and includes two maps, a list of personnel and a roll of honour. I'm happy to do any 'look ups'.

Hi Pete:

I'd be interested in any reference to Lieut. Alfred Peirce.

I'd also be interested in any action that the battery saw in October and November 1918 (Peirce won the MC in the King's Birthday Honours 1919 so I am looking for action in the final months of the war).

Cheers

Hi Andy,

Pete hasn't been on the forum since last November so probably worth dropping him a PM.

Birthday Honours are usually for an extended period of exemplary service rather than a specific act of gallantry so there may not be anything to find tied directly to the last two months of hostilities.

Cheers,

(Amother) Peter:)

Thanks Pete, I have a success rate of over 30% of finding recommendations or mentions of gallantry in the war diaries, or obituaries for NYH and KBH.

Cheers

The earlier part of their war service is covered by this war diary - link. The last few months should be covered by this one - link. To get them as free downloads you'll need to complete a very basic registration - link.

Andy,

have only just noticed this thread.

These are the only mentions of Lieut Peirce in the aforementioned book. The maps referred to look to be hand drawn by Peirce of which there are two and J.H.S. is Major J.H. Speeding DSO (Author).

A favour for a favour perhaps?

Rgds Paul

Another late addition to this thread. Marked on back “Officers and signallers of 283rd Siege Battery RGA”.

I can only see one officer

relative is second on left.

Love the expressions and potential Tom foolery around him. Look at hand positions. Is chap on far left getting a telling off from the photographer?

Hi Andy,

Sorry for the belated reply, it’s a long time since I’ve been on the site and I’ve only just noticed your query. I see that Paul has already helped you out re. mentions of Alfred in the book. I’ve included photos taken from it  showing details of the Battery movements in the final months of the war, along with a Battery photo taken in January 1917. Also a photo of whom I believe to be Major Speeding (though I’m not familiar with the uniform insignia).

Hello gentlemen, I was wondering if anyone has any information, regarding who served in the 283 Siege Battery during 1917.  My Great Grandfather was awarded the Military Medal for bravery and I am trying to obtain some information about him and the regiment during this time.

Welcome to the forum. Your relative was in the G Siege Park Army Service Corps 283 Motor Transport Company , not the RGA if I’ve read the card correctly. You haven’t specified which of the 6 he is, but I’ve assumed he’s the one with 283 mentioned. (Image courtesy of the National Archives) IMG_0863.jpeg8

Hi Michelle.  Many thanks, yes that’s correct the medal card you have posted is for my Great Grandfather.  His name was Edwin George Thomas.  I am attempting to collate as much information I can about him and present it to my farther, closer towards Remembrance Sunday.

As he wasn’t RGA  as I’ve explained, it would be best to start a new thread about him in Soldiers.
