Being new to the Air Force side of the Great War how much information can I obtain from this service number?

8617 1AM L W Hulston RAF

Date of enlistment or maybe trade or even where he may have served?

Any information would be gratefully received

Thanks

Mark

8617 1AM L W Hulston RAF:

1AM is Air Mechanic 1st Class. His service record should be available under Air 79 at the National Archives at Kew. This should include his trade, enlistment date and postings, plus his Date and Place of Birth, home address, former occupation, next of kin, and possibly education - if it is complete. Many are, so it's worth a look.

Good luck,

Bob

Hi Mark,

Airmen records are held in class Air 79 at the National Archives at Kew, there is an index in class Air 78 if you do not have a service number. Your mans record should be in Air79/112, you usually get some clue to date of birth and place, enlistment date, service prior to joining the RFC. Home address, next of kin, promotions and demotions, trade, medal entitlement and sketchy details of where he served the information is not always very detailed.

Air 79 are the RAF service records, so at best they usually only give sketchy details of their army (including RFC) service. He joined in 1915, but i can't find an army MIC for him, he probably served in the UK until 1916 or later.
