andigger Posted 9 January , 2004 Share Posted 9 January , 2004 Does anyone know of events/tours taking place this Aug to commemorate the Battle of Mons or of the Frontiers? This year marks 90 years since those days and I thought for sure something must be planned. I do know the Great War Society is doing a reenactment retreat, but I was hoping for something that was more spectator friendly (reenactments, etc.) Thanks! Paul Reed Posted 9 January , 2004 Share Posted 9 January , 2004 I have been trying to find out what is happening at Mons in August, but without much success. I am going to see the Tourist Office there next month, so if I find out anything I will let you know. I am also going to see the Tourist Office in Le Cateau, to see if they are planning anything. andigger Posted 9 January , 2004 Author Share Posted 9 January , 2004 Sorry didn't mean to say you were unfriendly!!! I am just not the type to put on a uniform and march. I'd like to watch others do it though (ala Joffre).

ianw Posted 10 January , 2004 Share Posted 10 January , 2004 Good chance to get some atmospheric pictures in the actual places where these events took place 90 years previously . One of my fondest memories is of the Khaki Pals marching out through an empty Menin Gate at 8.30pm or so , to disappear like ghosts into a murky Flanders evening with the sound of their boots slowly fading away. Almost no one watching and done by those guys as a simple tribute to those that marched out to the line. Moving and Magical.
Admin Michelle Young Posted 10 January , 2004 Admin Share Posted 10 January , 2004 I have been in touch with a chap who owns a gite near Le Cateau regarding events in August. He has visited the tourist info office , and he reported back that as yet, nothing is planned. I expect that the usual service will be held at the Suffolk/ Manchesters memorial on the evening of August 26th. Regreattably, I will be too many miles away (Finistere) to attend that, but I will be thinking of the battle. By the way, I'm hoping to spend some time around Le Cateau in April, will let the forum know nearer the time for any photo requests.
