Tony Lund Posted 2 September , 2007 Share Posted 2 September , 2007 I have just downloaded the record of Thomas Cuthbert Moody for a relative in Australia. Now I need to figure it out. I know that the words “late RND” suggest time with the Royal Naval Division, and Vivid II and Ganges are shore bases. VG and Sat will be Very Good and Satisfactory. And the physical description and date of birth etc., is clear enough, but that is about it for me. I will put the image in two posts. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thank you, Tony. submarine Posted 2 September , 2007 Share Posted 2 September , 2007 Hi Tony The only other time i have seen the P/C number under his name before was on one in my collection and he was injured on HMS/s A5 when she suffered an internal explosion in 1905,and E W Hughes AB , was invalided out of the Navy. He re-enlisted in Aug 1914 with a different number,so i think it is to show both numbers and service. Best wishes Colin
Tony Lund Posted 2 September , 2007 Author Share Posted 2 September , 2007 Thanks, I never noticed that. There does seem to be two numbers now I look again. I wonder if the words “late RND” has anything to do with it. Tony.
horatio2 Posted 2 September , 2007 Share Posted 2 September , 2007 A Protection and Identity Certificate (PIC) was issued to all men on demob - it proved, inter alia, that they were not deserters. Moody transferred to Stoker RN from the RNVR - Tyne Z/9189 - where he served in the Royal Naval Division. You can get a copy from the micro-fiche of his RND Record Card from the NA online at £3.50 or, alternatively, approach the FAA Museum where they hold the original cards. Tony Lund Posted 2 September , 2007 Author Share Posted 2 September , 2007 Thanks, I was wondering if there might be a separate record of the RND time. I will try and get hold of it. Tony.
horatio2 Posted 2 September , 2007 Share Posted 2 September , 2007 Further to my last, Moody may well have been among the numerous RNVR men sent home from Lemnos after the Gallipoli campaign on 29 March 1916 for transfer to sea service. That date would tie in well with his transfer to Stoker on 26 April 1916.
