Hi All

Please can you me, currently researching a soilder in the east kent regiment and found out that his brother was KIA 17/06/16 on HMTD Eden

a couple of questions

1. What does HMTD stand for as i have never come across it before.

2. Does anyone have any info on Eden as my books have drawn a blank, did she sink or was engaged in enemy action?

3. Why would he be buried in a cemetry in Le Harve?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

James

Hello James,

It should probably be HMTBD, His Majesty`s Torpedo Boat Destroyer, an early title used for destroyers.

Eden was a River class destroyer lost in a collision in the North Sea on 18th June 1916. Commanding Officer was Lt. A. C. Farguhar R.N.

Regards,

ARABIS.

Hello James,

On 17th June 1916 HM Destroyer Eden, built 1904, 545 tons, was cut in two by HMT France whose steering gear had failed, when escorting her to Le Havre, France English Channel. 39 crewmen died.

Best wishes
