Esskay Posted 23 August , 2007 Share Posted 23 August , 2007 I am having trouble uploading a brief obit from The Times - so here is the text: Second Lieutenant George Heygate Fincham, 6th Squadron RFC whose death is officially announced today was killed in France on March 9 aged 25. He was the second and only surviving son of the late Lt Colonel G H Fincham AOD and the late Mrs W F Jameson. He was educated at the College of the Sacred Heart, Wimbledon. At the outbreak of the war he was engaged with much success on engineering work in Southern India. He returned to England and applied for a commission in the RFC and very quickly obtaining his pilot's certificate he was gazetted as a pilot in June 1915.He flew over to join his squadron in France in August 1915 and in February of this year was promoted Flight Commander and posted as captain though up to the time of his death he had not appeared as such in the Gazette.During this period he had many successful encounters with hostile aeroplanes, and on one occasion successfully repelled and outmanouvered an attack by five hostile machines. He met with his death during an engagement with a hostile machine while on an observation flight over the enemy lines, when his observer having been killed, he was himself severely wounded, and, losing conciousness, his machine fell in the British lines. He was recognised in the RFC as a most skilled and intrepid pilot It seems he was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1890 - he is recorded in the Army Births records. Whilst the obit and CWGC list his father as G H Fincham - I think he was probably Born: Herbert George Fincham 1854 Apr-May-Jun St George Hanover Square London, Middlesex Died: Herbert George Fincham (born) abt 1854 1895 Oct-Nov-Dec Kensington Greater London, London, Middlesex Harts Army List of 1888 on Find myPast lists the Deputy Assist Com Gen of Ordnance on Guernsey as HG Fincham - Cheers Sue

Starlight Posted 29 November , 2007 Share Posted 29 November , 2007 Hi Cnock, I was in Belgium last week and took photos of George Fincham's headstone as well as Graham Price's. You can see that they were buried side by side and were given more room than the other headstones. Regards Steve Sorry, missed one!
