snavek Posted 14 August , 2007 Share Posted 14 August , 2007 When grandfather was posted missing 25/4/1918 my grandmother was left with a child (my mother) and no independant income. It wasn't until 2/6/1919 that the family were finally notified that '....the Army Council have been regretfully constrained to conclude that he is dead, and that his death took place on the 25/4/1918 (or since).' Talking to my 92 years old mother today about when she used to go to the Post Office every week after WW1 to draw her 10/- (?orphan allowance), which she said she got until she left school at 14 we got to wondering how grandmother managed for money. In the period between 25/4/1918 and 2/6/1919 would she still get soldier's allowance (he wasn't officially dead) or would she get a pension? and as a Private what sort of money would that have been? Did grandmother lose her widows pension when she remarried? Keith
