j.r.f Posted 30 November , 2007 Share Posted 30 November , 2007 pals This is developing into a very important thread.I have just finnished producing a data-base of the BRISTOL ROLL OF HONOUR.Many of the names on this rolle also appear on the rolls quoted above.I am hoping to publish THE BRISTOL ROLL on the LONG LONG TRAIL which is the mother site to this forum. The BRISTOL ROLL has some 4600 names on it.I have down lowded it onto a c.d.,but I am having difficulties in producing any more copies at the moment.Perhaps we could swap data-bases,or see if the could all be put on the LONG LONG TRAIL site.To be able to cross reference these lads would add to the information that we have. I think that this is an important project, that must be repeated in other parts of the country.Just think what a recourse it would be if they were all joined together on one sight. I will look forward to your comments. CHEERS FOR NOW. JOHN FLOOK.

tocemma Posted 16 December , 2007 Share Posted 16 December , 2007 Hello Memorialhunter, "Berkeley War Memorial World War II BARGE Frederick Trooper 5186081 43rd Recce Corp,R.A.C (2/5 Gloucestershire Regt). Killed when the ship he was on blew up by a mine which got attached to an anchor chain whilst moored in the English Channel prior to D.Day 24/6.1945 age 24. Son of William & Annie of Berkeley Glos Commemorated on the Bayeux Memorial France" Corrections: '43rd Reconnaissance Regiment' Date: 24/06/1944 and After D-day (D-Day was 6th June) Details of sinking below. Not WW1 but a slight correction of detail to the entry for Trooper Fred Barge of 43rd Recce Regiment. I am the Archivist of the 43rd Recce Regiment History Group and the loss of the troopship 'MV Derrycunihy' and consequent casualties to 43rd Recce has been my personal research project for some years now. On Saturday 24th June 1944 the Derrycunihy was at anchor off Sword Beach, Normandy. After receiving instructions to proceed to Juno beach to offload, the Derrycunihy started its engines and was starting to move when a German 'Oyster' acoustic mine, laid in an air raid the previous evening, detonated beneath the ship. The detonation which followed caused the vessel to break in two just aft of the engine room. The stern of the Derrycunihy sank within seconds taking with it a large number of men from A, C and HQ Squadrons. When the Roll was called later that morning it was found that 188 men of the Regiment and attached supporting arms had been lost. In addition a further 15 crew members and attached DEMS gunners, including an Seaborne observer of the Royal Observer Corps, had been lost. It was the single largest British loss of life off the Normandy beaches but is now all but forgotten. Despite the fact that none of the bodies were recovered from the submerged stern, the wreck is not designated as an official war grave. In fact post war the wreck was 'reduced' with explosives as it is very close to the entrance to Caen Ouistreham harbour. I am organising a commemoration for the 65th Anniversary of the sinking in 2009. There are still around 30 survivors of the sinking alive all of whom I have contacted. I've no doubt that there may be others and I am frequently contacted by relatives carrying out research. It is hoped to carry out a wreath laying and service above the remains of the wreck which is at just 10 metres depth. Off WW1 subject I know, but there is no direct WW2 equivalent of the Great War Forum, certainly not a serious research forum anyway!
