The following comes from Jim Herlihy 'Dublin Metropolitan Police' A short history and geneological guide.

John Barton DMP Sgt...At 230 pm 14th Nov 1917 a telephone message was recd at the station that 26 yr old Lieutenant Vincent of the Royal Flying Corp had escaped from military custody at the Grosvenpr Hotel. Sgt Barton acc by Const Brennan went in search of him...found him in a lodging house in Robinsons Quay, where the tenant Mrs Tulley said that a man fitting the desc of the Lts description was in the upsatirs room with a revolver in plain clothes.

He had instructed her to throw his uniform in the Liffey and would shoot anyone who came to arrest him.

Barton and Brennan went upstairs found the door ajar and went inside...the Lt was lying on the bed and jumped up grabbing his revolver...after a long struggle the Lieutenant was overcome-back at the station they found on him 71 rounds of ammo. Doesnt look like he was FGCM not in the MICs etc.

Sgt Barton was awarded the Kings Police Medal for his action.
