Indunna Posted 4 August , 2007 Share Posted 4 August , 2007 Nurses killed on the HS Glenart Castle - sunk 26/2/1918 The Brittish Journal of Nursing - Volume 60, 9th March 1918 (p165) - Amongst the nursing staff of the Glenart Castle were two nurses who had just given up the greater part of a year to nursing German prisoners of war at Belmont, Surrey. We all know how hard this task is, and it seems an act of brutal ingratitude that their work for the enemy ‘wounded should be requited with foul murder at the hands of the German navy. Sister R. R. Beresford joined the Glenart Castle on February 24th ; and Sister Blake, an Australian, in November. A memorial service, held on Sunday in the hospital chapel at Belmont, was conducted by Captain Whitaker, who paid a high tribute to the work of the Sisters. During the impressive service, Sister Berry sang “ 0 Rest in the Lord ” ; and it concluded with the “ Last Post.” The Brittish Journal of Nursing - Volume 60, 16th March 1918 (p185) OUR ROLL OF HONOUR. NURSING SERVICE. MISSING, BELIEVED DROWNED. Nurse A. Weir, B.R.C.S. Beaufoy, Matron K., Q.A.I.M.N.S.R. ; Beresford, St. Nurse R. R., Q.A.I.M.N.S.R. ; Blake St. Nurse: E., Q.A.I.M.N.S.R. ; Edgar, St. Nurse E., Q.A.I.M.N.S.R.; Evans, Sister J., Q.A.I.M.N.S.R.; Henry, St. Nurse C. E., Q.A.I.M.N.S.R.; Kendall, Sister R. E., Q.A.I.M.NS.R.; MacKinnon, St. Nurse, M., T.F.N.S. We have already referred to the brutal sinking of the hospital ship Glenart Castle in the Bristol Channel on February 26th by an enemy submarine. The names now published are those of the nursing staff on board. British nurses have always shown themselves ready to take the risks of war in order to give skilled help to the sick and wounded. In the present war they know full well that every voyage they take on a hospital ship they are subjected to the risks of murder most foul at the hands of a barbarous foe, with instincts of which savages would be ashamed. To subject oneself to risks of this kind demands rare courage, but British nurses have not flinched. We salute with profound respect the members of the nursing staff of the Glenart Castle who have willingly offered their lives at the shrine of duty, and who there is much reason to fear have been sacrificed to the appalling wickedness of the Hun. Out of interest Margaret Weir, a stewardess, went down on the Lusitania.
