jemcareessex Posted 3 August , 2007 Share Posted 3 August , 2007 Hi, I have established from some letters preserved by my family that my gt grandfather, a crpl, who was with the Royal Field Artillery on the Western Front turned up in Bombay from Feb 1918 to Oct 1919 and served with the Bombay City Police until recalled to be demobilised. His papers were destroyed in WW2 so can trace anything that way. His medal cards do not show anything. The RFA archives have advised that there is no way I can trace why he was there anyone any ideas? Elaine
Max (UK) Posted 3 August , 2007 Share Posted 3 August , 2007 Probably not relevant, but I'll post it anyway. I have one relative who was in India and apparently was in the RFA throughout the war in the capacity of guarding train loads of ammunition and equipment that were transported from the South of the country to the Northern Frontier where the "action" was. Without being escorted, there was good chance of the stuff being ambushed. I have not researched/verified this, it is what his son (now 89) told me. lionboxer Posted 3 August , 2007 Share Posted 3 August , 2007 I have a 2nd Norfolks man discharged in India after being hospitalised from Mespot who joined the Bombay City Police Force from June 18 until he died Jan 19. I can find nothing further as there are no police records extant. Maybe they were part of the same scheme and knew each other. I would be interested if you manage to trawl anything up.
