Air Attacks on Harwich 1917

Hi All,

While in Harwich on the 17-6-1917 the submarine E4 records in her log that she took hostile aircraft under fire. That morning she expended 34 rounds at them. Does anyone have any information as to what these aircraft were and what they were doing?

On the night of 16th/17th June 1917, Navy Zeppelins L42 and L48 targetted London. L48 dropped bombs 5 miles away from Harwich and was brought down by Home Defence aircraft - the victory should have been awarded to Watkins, Saundby and Holder/Ashby (2 seater) but it seems to have been arbitarily award to just Watkins.

If E3 shot at "heavier than air" aircraft, then it was friendly fire! Other wise she shot at L48.

Hi Mike,

thanks for that, i had this on the navy site and didn't get an answer. All they say is hostile aircraft so one would say your right.

Cheers DB.

Hi Mike,

have been reading more into the Zeppelin L48 and which makes an interesting story. I've attached the part of E4's log that covers her firing at L48.

Cheers DB.
