Dear All

I am researching a man who served on HMS G3 , I have checked all the books that i

have and the only one that mentions any of the Class ( but especially G3 ) is "We Dive

at Dawn". The period i am looking for is 1917.Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello Colin,

In 1917 G1, 5 and 8 each lost one man, ang G9 was sunk, with only one man surviving.

Best wishes

Although based at Blyth, the first nine G boats spent rather a lot of time up at Scapa from 1917 onwards. They were specifically detailed to patrol the Shetlands gap, engaged on anti submarine patrols. Brian Head of the Submarine Museum has carried out an extensive analysis of G boat patrols. His papers will be available in Blyth library

William Carr's 'By Guess and By God' specifically covers G boat patrols in home waters.

Ron Youngs forthcoming 'Silent Warriors' vols 1 and 4 offers an analysis of anti submarine patrols carried out by G boats from Blyth and the Tees as well as eye witness accounts

Dear All

Many thanks for all your help, you never fail.

His name Leonard Victor Hauser MBE:DSM: ERA/Lt . DSM ,"Submarine Service 1917" in G3 LG 5th Sept 1917

"for long and arduous service and successful action with enemy armed vessels". He also served on Submarines

H2 :G3 :H42 : H48 :M2 :Submarine Mus`has no record of him but they did have a photo of him in 1928 as a

Warrant Eng` on HMS/s M2. He was still in Submarines in the 1930 Navy List. I have just been told that the

MBE is a 1938 Birthday Honours list.

Best Wishes

Hello Sadsac,

I agree with your numbers and name for overall losses from the G class, but I quoted figures from 1917, the year the original ost specified.

Best wishes

David
