Remembered Today:

S.T. ”Calphurnia”

Hello - Another request for information about a Grimsby Trawler, (S.T. ”Calphurnia”), as always any would be much appreciated.

I’ve been trying to find out more on the loss of this trawler. Records I have access to list it has missing since 14th September 1914. The CWGC must be satisfied that the loss was due to enemy action so I’m wondering if any more information came to light at a later date?

I have the CWGC details on eight of the crew, listed below: (but I believe there is at least one more that I haven’t found.)

Skipper: T. Robinson

Mate: G. H. Parsons

Second Engineer: W. Mackie

Trimmers: F. Denton, W. Middleton,

Deck hands: W. H. Knight, P. Anderson, E Nunn,

CWGC seem to have struggled with this vessel’s name, three of the eight above have typos/spelling errors in their casualty details:

Skipper T. Robinson’s Unit text is shown as: "Calphuria"

Second Engineer W. Mackie’s Unit text is shown as: Steam Trawler "Calphurna" (Grimsby)

Deck hand E Nunn’s Unit text is shown as: Steam Trawler "Calphumia" (Grimsby)

Cheers Terry

Terry,

SMS Nautilus laid mines off the Humber on the night of August 25/26, 1914. The presumption that gets the crew into the GWGC database would be that Calphurnia sank on one of these.

Best wishes,

Michael

Michael, John, and David,

Many thanks for the replies and the information I was looking for.

Terry Denham - You are too quick, I was waiting to see if any more crew members needed corrections to their CWGC details before contacting you. Perhaps they did but when I checked the CWGC site before 10 am today all unit text typos had been corrected and all twelve are correct - Truly impressive.

Thanks again and....

Cheers Terry
