Remembered Today:

VADs and patients, Dulwich

Hi,

I have a photo showing my great grandmother Gertrude Easton (née Bond) as a VAD nurse.

After she lost her first husband (married in September 1914), William Harris of the 9th Bn Devonshires, who died at Loos on 30/9/1915, she left Swansea for London and became a at Dulwich (Southwark Military Hospital, I assume). There she met my wounded great grandfather, Sidney Francis Easton, and they married in 1920.

In the attached photo, she is the nurse standing to the left behind the seated sister (as you look at the photo).

I'm guessing the picture was taken in 1917+, given the US flags on the wall. It seems to be some kind of ceremony, perhaps to mark the victory in 1918.

Anyone have any clues? And indeed, any broader information about registers of nursing staff and/or patients at the hospital?

Cheers,

JWF
