stevem49 Posted 24 July , 2007 Share Posted 24 July , 2007 The 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters relieved the Naval Division around Gully Ravine on 23 July 1915. It was the first occasion that these volunteers had been in the line. On 24th July 1915 the Battalion suffered its first two deaths. Major George Rudolf Fielding was killed by a sniper and is buried in Skew Bridge Cemetery - grave II. D. 3 6076 Private Daniel Barfield had served as a regular on the Indian frontier and South Africa. He is known to be buried in Redoubt Cemetery, special memorial A.94. If anyone visits these cemeteries, stop and say hello. We will remember them. R.I.P.
