Hi can anyone explain what the rank pte 2 means as in 163246 pte 2 S A Harmes RAF? & what kind of jobs would this rank have performed?

Mark, I have a casualty Private 1st Class, so I presume yours to be Private 2nd Class, ground crew? other RFC/RAF experts on the forum will no doubt enlighten us in the near future. Ralph.

Could this be what became Aircraftman 2nd Class - the lowest rank in the RAF sometimes refered to as AC plonk?

In 1918 the RAF had a variety of ranks later consolodated into the ones we are more famialiar with. Privates seemed to be for non technical duties. His trade should be on his RAF papers in AIR 79 at Kew (service number order).
