Remembered Today:

London Gazette

I recently asked whether it would be possible that a citation existed for the award of the MC which was gazetted 3rd June 1919.

The response told me that this was the 'peace' or 'victory' Gazette and that MC citations may not have been published.

So, I moved on to my next subject for research, only to find that his DCM was gazetted on the same date

Does this mean that even for this type of award, there would not have been a citation published?

Any sources for further reading on the subject would be appreciated.

many thanks,

Ken

I may be wrong, but judging by the date it is a King's Birthday Honours list. MCs were certainly awarded at this time, along with titles, OBEs and whatnot. They did not carry a citation. I suspect the same is true of DCMs. Similar awards were made in the New Year Honours. It is at these times that you find many awards to staff, chaplains, and the like.

Thanks Chris,

I maybe getting confused here (mince pie overload) but I understand how and MC, MiD etc could be awarded as a birthday honour, but how could a DCM, an award for outstanding gallantry, be anything other than an immediate award? Were they saved up for submission in time for the Birthday Honours list?
