Landsturm Posted 2 July , 2007 Share Posted 2 July , 2007 We have to keep this going, guys! Great entries this June, greetings to everyone who participated and/or voted. Now, as no one took a step forward yesterday, I think I'll put up the title for this month. Hopefully in perfect understanding. As you can guess, our "Monthly 'Great War' Art" title for this July will be... July the First and obviously based in Somme. I wish to see many different locations featured. Weird that we didn't this back in 2006...? So... Over the top, chaps! Les give 'im hell!!

spike10764 Posted 2 July , 2007 Share Posted 2 July , 2007 Excuse my b...... ignorance, but what does MGWAT stand for and does it have a life outside the Forum? MGWAT- Monthly Great War Art Topic A bit of fun for the artists and aspirant artists and just about anyone who wants to submit a drawing /poem/ prose piece/ painting/cartoon/photo etc for the posters to view. Each month has a topic title- June's was Kamerad. A the end of the month we have a poll were you can vote for your favourite. It has no life outside the forum - just a bit of fun and please feel free to join in..... July the First, it is Landsturm. Can I ask the posters a favour ? I'm going on holiday from 27th July, so could one of the other entrants do the poll at the months end ? I don't know how the multiple vote went down, so I'll try to find out if we should return to 1 poster, 1 vote before then....
David Filsell Posted 3 July , 2007 Share Posted 3 July , 2007 Many thanks for your response. The "artist in me" is strictly limited. But I shall watch with interest best regards
Chris Foster Posted 3 July , 2007 Share Posted 3 July , 2007 Spike, would it be possible for you to to post instructions on how to set up the poll ? That way, it wouldn't have to fall on you each time. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would give it a go if they knew how to. Cheers Chris
spike10764 Posted 3 July , 2007 Share Posted 3 July , 2007 There is a post somewhere, with a screenshot guide to how to do it. I'll try and find it later and post a link. If not I've got the screeshots somewhere on my PC and I'll post instructions again. As for the July MGWAT- here is my entry JULY THE FIRST (Left Behind) From summers sunshine beauty to a hell fo shellshocked noise, A flowers scent becomes lost in the stench of war (a broken mind). For I have seen this thing with mine own eyes, And here I stand....left behind, left behind. Do I want to live , right now I do not know ? Did I not volunteer, like all the rest to go ? When whistles blew I stood and watched in time, The men I knew are gone now...left behind, left behind. When silence reigned, it did not last for long, The cannon stopped and maxims sang their sorry static song, And all the men I knew are dead and gone I stand here now and truly feel alone. I know I cannot look their families in the eye, For they are gone and I am left behind..... Cadre- an unspecified number of officers and men left out of battle and sent to transport lines to ensure there would be a "core" to rebuild a battalion that suffered heavy losses in an assault. They were usualy a mix of experienced men and specialists that could be spared from the attack. I wonder how some of these men felt- they had trained alongside their "Pals" and fate had spared them the ordeal on this occasion. Some would feel lucky, but in the early days of Kitcheners Army, before the tragedy of war hit, I wonder how many did not....

Gunboat Posted 4 July , 2007 Share Posted 4 July , 2007 spike that is excellent and rather scarily a similar angle from which I was going to approach it. You are often very self-deprecating about your poetry, there is abosloutely no reason to be so....this is a gem. Nice one.
Ozzie Posted 4 July , 2007 Share Posted 4 July , 2007 Spike, yet again you draw us into an oft forgotten part of the war. Excellent. Cheers Kim
spike10764 Posted 4 July , 2007 Share Posted 4 July , 2007 Thanks Gunboat and Ozzie, I'm toying with a prose version of the tale of a man in a cadre, for another months topic when a suitable opportunity presents.... I hope my instructions are enough for someone to do the poll at the end of the month
Ozzie Posted 4 July , 2007 Share Posted 4 July , 2007 He, he, I get out of trying to put up the poll, and probably stuffing it up. Cause I will be not here, but will be over there! Cheers Kim PS Will try and get something done before I go, and will try to do a poll in the future.
sjustice Posted 8 July , 2007 Share Posted 8 July , 2007 "Hanging On The Line" The drawings are based on sketches from SS 537 "Summary of Recent Information Regarding the German Army and its methods (Jan 1917)" depicting hidden M.G. emplacements and the phenomenon of MGs appearing in No-man's-land. The figure is based on a photgraph of a showman called Arthur Empey who used to perform his travelling show based on his "experiences" of 2 years fighting with the BEF between October 1915 and February 1917 as a Machine Gunner and Bomber with the Royal Fusileers [sic]. sjustice Posted 12 July , 2007 Share Posted 12 July , 2007 I'm not very "up" on my "....ages"- I thought it was a collage. A welcome new entrant though hehe well technically it is a collage in it's composition, even though it is digitally created, as I created the different elements with a specific colour and line composition in vew for the whole. Montage is correct also in that it is seperate entities combined for one piece. Either works for me SMJ

Either works for me SMJ A collage ussually is acheived by actually cutting and adhering materials to form an image or effect whereas a montage is a similar process but done photographically. I would argue that as it is digital imagery it is a montage. However the words are pretty much interchangable. Whatever we call it is a welcome entry
aley Posted 13 July , 2007 Share Posted 13 July , 2007 Here's my effort. It's meant to represent a barrage seen from a distance.
sjustice Posted 13 July , 2007 Share Posted 13 July , 2007 I like it. Redolent of Streeton's barrage over Villers-Bretonneaux in On The Somme at Corbie, my favourite of his. Is yours part of a larger work? Kind Regards, SMJ
aley Posted 13 July , 2007 Share Posted 13 July , 2007 Is yours part of a larger work? Kind Regards, SMJ Thanks for the feedback Simon. I am familiar with the Streeton to which you refer. He knew how to push paint around. No it is not part of a larger work. It's quite small, about postcard size. David.

ypres1418 Posted 13 July , 2007 Share Posted 13 July , 2007 First July 2006, 7:15am Standing in the sunken lane, not on my own as usual but with around 75 others, my body (which had start6ed to shake as I walked up) continued to shake. The lads in khaki watching me closely as I undid the top of my champagne bottle! ‘Don’t worry I wont send the cork over to where I normally do I’ll send it the other way.’ This got a little chuckle from them and sighs of relief! At 7:28 the lads stood ready to go over the top, and by this time my whole body was shaking so much the cork flew before time! At 7:30 the whistle blew for the lads to stand to attention and I managed, just about, to say ‘They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them.’ I raised my glass and drank to the boys as I had done for the previous 8 years and lads moved off. This then allowed me to give the lads laying in the sunken lane their drink! A concerned lady asked if I was ok and I responded that I was, although this feeling welling up inside of me was great and I had never had this experience before. Once everyone had moved off I was able to release the emotion bottled up inside of me and allow the man within to call out for his mother and released him up with the Angels! Had that man within been me in 1916? I like to think it was, but who was I? Was I now laying in the cemetery just the other side of the bank or am I one who’s name is on the Thiepval Memorial with no known grave? Could I be at the top in Redan Ridge? I am still not sure but then I don’t really need to know that, the experience left me tired and exhilarated at the same time! First July 2007, 7:15am Standing in the Sunken Lane again, this time with Will my friend and no-one else we had a quieter time and with the rum for us and the lads we had time to reflect and read a passage from Paul Reeds ‘Walking the Somme’, which we did, and the feelings of last year came back but not as fierce. We then walked round to the cemetery and again I looked at the names as I passed up to the cross, could one of them have been me? I think so, so now I will look closer and find out who I was! Mandy.
