HMS/M C23

In the book "We Dive at Dawn" it mentions the submarine C23 in March 1917 in the North Hinder area coming across a shelled Dutch Steamer. They came alongside and picked up the ships Second mate who was still on board. Then the ship started to sink and the boat was able to get away just in time. Does anyone know what ship this was and what u-boat sank it? The book didn't mention any date but, I do know the following Dutch ships were sunk in the North Sea during this month :

23.3.17 Tresfratnes I don't know which u-boat

31.3.17 Hestia by UB23

Any help would be wecome.

Hello James,

it was the dutch S/S AMSTELSTROOM, 1413 g.r.t., found 8 miles NE of Noord Hinder LV on March 24th, 1917.

Because of the heavy seas C 23 (Lt. Hugh C. Carlyon-Britton) was damaged while going alongside the AMSTELSTROOM and so she had to return to Harwich.

The steamer originally was damaged by shellfire from german torpedoboats V 44, G 86 and G 87 on March 23rd at 01:40h, finally sunk by german U-boat UB 10 (Oblt. z. S. Erich von Rohrscheidt) with torpedo on March 27th.

Cheers

Oliver

Thanks it looks like one of those ships that are hard to kill and truth is stranger than fiction tales.
