Lost in Tilloy Posted 25 June , 2007 Share Posted 25 June , 2007 Hi Terry I'm researching a Church memorial that has a man called: James W.R. MacDowall I cannot find this man on the CWGC. He is mentioned in the 'Minor Returns' at Register House in Edinburgh as James W.R. McDowall, died in 1916 aged 30. Unfortunately the image is not available online. The NA has a medal card for a James W.R. McDowall, Private S/9397, Gordon Highlanders. SDGW and the 'Scottish National War Memorial' lists this man simply as James McDowall: Born: Barony, Lanarkshire Enlisted: Glasgow Rank: Private Number: S/9397 Regiment/Battn: 1st Gordon Highlanders Died how: Died Died when: 7/05/1916 Theatre: F&F I've tried alternative spellings without any luck. Can you help? Regards LIT

Lost in Tilloy Posted 25 June , 2007 Author Share Posted 25 June , 2007 Hi Kevin Never thought of trying under the other initials. Definitely my man looking at the Davidson's Mains connection. Thanks again. LIT
Guest KevinEndon Posted 25 June , 2007 Share Posted 25 June , 2007 Here's how I did it incase it helps others went on the CWGC site and put in Mac in the search along with year of death, which came up with too many names 1428 I then kept the year of death and put MacD in the search which came up with 290 names. But nothing for 07/05/16 which looked like it could be our man. I went back to the search and put in McD which came up with 609 names. I clicked on the date of death at the top to place in numerical order and on page 7 found him. Please remember even Scotts are unsure if it's Mc or Mac so its worth checking both hope that helps Kevin
