Harkness Posted 23 June , 2007 Share Posted 23 June , 2007 Two weeks ago I was at Gestingthorpe, North Essex. I noticed a woman's name on a War Memorial so I set out to do some research. Sybil's father, King Downs, owned an iron foundry at Gestingthorpe. And I have not been able to find any more information on Sybil. Nothing on CWGC and BMDs. Is there a database of VAD's nurses? Sue Light Posted 24 June , 2007 Share Posted 24 June , 2007 I don't have any information about her, but this is her photo, courtesy of the IWM - she died on 11th May 1917. Sue

Harkness Posted 24 June , 2007 Author Share Posted 24 June , 2007 Thank you, Sue, for the lovely photo of Sybil Downs. As I have an interest in WWI, seeing her name on a war memorial intrigued me! May I ask what is IWM? Christina Harkness
Sue Light Posted 24 June , 2007 Share Posted 24 June , 2007 Christina It's the Imperial War Museum - the image is one from their 'Women, War and Society' collection. Sue

Sue Light Posted 24 June , 2007 Share Posted 24 June , 2007 Something I wonder about constantly - trouble is, I haven't found the answer yet Mind you, I'm fairly famous for my Shepherd's Pie, and my instant recall of train timetables! Sue
