Local memorial man died 22/1/17 and is on the Tower Hill Memorial.

Forum search shows another man of the SS Linwood also died on this date.

No sign of the vessel in British Vessels lost 1914-1918, can anyone shed any light on what happened to the Linwood on this date or the fate of the men.

Bob.

Hello Bob,

HMT Linwood left port on 20th January 1917, passed Gibraltar on 22nd, and is untraced. Was carrying Iron ore fromCartagena to Maryport.

Could have been sunk by enemy action or have fallen victim to maritime causes.

Best wishes

David

At this point, looks like weather and not a U-boat but that's not 100% certain yet.

Best wishes,

Michael

Bob,

British Vessels Lost at Sea 1914-18 contains a listing of "British Merchant Vessels Captured or Destroyed by the Enemy." As Linwood was not known/regarded as being destroyed by the enemy as of early 1919 when the list was compiled, she's not included. There are a number of other cases of ships than went missing that aren't in BVLAS as well.

Best wishes,

Michael
