George Ernest BEATTY (middle name also given as Edward in some documents) date of birth 20th August 1889 at Newcastle upon Tyne, joined the Royal Marines in May 1906 and served for 5 years and 299 days.

In a letter in 1912 he gave his address as Number 4 Mess, HMS Seahorse, Portsmouth. Are there any Royal Marine researchers out there who may have a database of men who served and could provide me with his regimental number.

Did he serve in WWI? At Kew Royal Marines: medal roll : ADM 171/167 NCOs and Men A-Con. If not there are also the ADM 313 indexes.

According to the Royal Marine medal rolls, George Ernest Beatty's service number was PO (Portsmouth) 14467. His register of service can be found at Kew in ADM 159/186. According to this, he was born on 1 March 1888 in All Saints, Newcastle. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve in 1912 and was recalled to the Colours in 1914. George was demobbed in 1919 and he rejoined the RFR. He was awarded a Star, Victory and War medals and in April 1922 received the RFR LSGC.

Thanks for the excellent information on Beatty, it has completed my record for him. He joined Newcastle City Police on 12th April 1912 and gave the date of birth 20.8.1889 at St Andrews, Newcastle upon Tyne. The RM address was on a letter he sent to the police when he applied to join.

The different date of birth is not unusual, I have a couple of ex Royal Navy men who have different dates of birth on their navy files and police files.

Unfortunately not, just interested in them mainly 1740s to early 1800s but stray backwards and forwards up to 1923.
