Stebie9173 Posted 11 June , 2007 Share Posted 11 June , 2007 Whilst looking for another officer, I found an obituary for John Eustace Jarvis. Times 9-4-1918 Medal card of Jarvis, John Eustace Corps Regiment No Rank Canadian Infantry Canadian Expeditionary Force 21620 Private Northamptonshire Regiment Lieutenant http://data4.collectionscanada.ca/netacgi/...mp;r=12&f=G Though the obituary is fairly confident in his death, I can't find him on CWGC nor ODGW. The Gazette, though rather confused, seems to have him leaving the army at the end of the war. He does however appear on the Officers overseas death indices : (Jarvis doesn't seem to have been a good name to have had as an officer in the Northamptons. 3 out of 16 Jarvis's killed in the war belonged to the Regiment ) (EDIT: In fact, John and Arnold (1st Bn, died 31-10-1914) were brothers.) He was in the 2nd Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, during 1917 at least, mentioned in the Regiment history. - A Battle Patrol on 14-1-1917. - Raid against the "hog's back" overlooking Bouchavesnes (taking Pallas Trench) on 4th March 1917 for which he won his M.C. The Regimental history does not record his death, nor does he feature in the short list of officers killed in the 2nd Bn. in March 1918. LG 11-5-1915 War Office, 11th May, 1915. The undermentioned Gentlemen Cadets, from the Royal Military College, to be Second Lieutenants. Dated 12th May 1915:— REGULAR FORCES The Northamptonshire Regiment. Leslie Henry Marc Mackenzie. LG 11-10-1919 North'n R. - The notification in the Gazette of 8th Sept. 1919 appointing Lt. J. E. Jarvis, M.C., to the Res. of Off. is cancelled. LG 11-5-1917 Lt. John Eustace Jarvis, North'n R. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid on the enemy's trenches. He led his platoon in a most gallant manner, killing 28 of the enemy and capturing 21 prisoners. He has at all times set a splendid example. Can anyone else find his death? Thanks Pals, Steve.

John_Hartley Posted 11 June , 2007 Share Posted 11 June , 2007 Steve The LG entry for 11/10/19 cancelling the earlier one tends to support that information had come to hand that he was dead. John

Stebie9173 Posted 11 June , 2007 Author Share Posted 11 June , 2007 a.k.a. Samuel Clemens then..... I wonder if he framed his obituary and death certificate from 1918? His parents had six sons of all of whom served. At least Arnold, above, and Engineer Sub-Lieutenant Hugh Townley Jarvis, RNR, lost aboard the torpedoed HMS Calgarian on 1st March 1918, didn't make it through. Steve. chris.wight Posted 16 August , 2007 Share Posted 16 August , 2007 Thanks for all the information on Lt. Jarvis - I've added him to the Canadian Great War Project, link. After the war, his former employer the Bank of Commerce put together a two volume Memorial Book so he may be mentioned.
