nklein Posted 8 June , 2007 Share Posted 8 June , 2007 I have just created a blog of my grandmother's diary - http://www.july1914.blogspot.com/ - which I found decades after her death. She wrote this diary in July to August 1914 while on an educational trip to Europe, arranged through the Polytechnic of Central London (now the University of Westminster - I have lodged a transcript there and with the IWM). Dora and her group were in Switzerland as war was declared, and after travelling back to Liverpool became one of 120,000 US citizens repatriated by the US government. She seems to have been oblivious to any growing tension across Europe and does not mention the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. However, her description of the dilemmas of her party when they realise that they are stranded are quite vivid. I plan to put more pictures in - but the two you can see there are the only ones I have from that era. Any feedback gratefully received.
