Richard Maybery, 56 Sqn

Would anybody out there know who was flying the aeroplane that Maybery sent down in flames when he himself was caught napping by German anti-aircraft guns and fell to his death?

Any information about him would be gratefully received.

Regards,

Trebrys.

Capt R A Maybery MC, of No 56 Sqn RFC, was flying SE 5a B506 when he was shot down over Bourlon Wood at about 1300 on 19 December 1917. He was credited with a victory over an Albatros D.V at 1250, but there doesn't seem to be a corresponding loss in the German records; the only loss for that day shown in the authoritative references is Ltn Walter Braun of Jasta 20 who was fatally wounded over Faumont at 1405.

Without the camera guns used in the next conflict, there will always be lots of mysteries associated with Great War aerial actions.

Regards

Gareth

That's what confused me as I couldn't seem to find anyone on the German casualty list!

Many thanks for your ready replies again, Gareth!

He was maybe in combat with someone from Jasta 5 apparently .... possibly .... maybe . 56 pilots thought it was "GreenTail " that got Maybery , until it was decided that flak battery 108 did .
