nhclark Posted 22 May , 2007 Share Posted 22 May , 2007 Can anyone advise me of the activities of HMS Caradoc between February 1919 and January 1921? I have a man on board during that period. It was his first ship after training, and he recieved his war service gratuity for service on her, and also the Victory and British War Medals. I know that Caradoc was involved in action against the Bolsheviks. Where can I find detail, and why was this considered part of WW1? Many thanks, Noel

MAW Posted 22 May , 2007 Share Posted 22 May , 2007 Reference: Churchill and the Archangel Fiasco, November 1918-July 1919 (Kettle, 1992) Pages 167-168 Regarding actions on the Baltic coast: Soon after the Armistice on the Western Front the Russian Bolsheviks attacked the Baltic States in the East and made rapid advances. On 29/11/18, The Times announced that they had captured Pskov and Dvinsk, and bombarded Narva and that a Baltic-bound British Squadron (including HMS Caradoc) was approaching Copenhagen. This Squadron went to Reval where arms and supplies were landed for the Estonian troops (and the Cruiser HMS Cassandra struck a mine). On December 17, The Times stated that the British Squadron had shelled Bolshevik troops who were invading Estonia some 6O miles west of Reval. This alerted the Bolsheviks and, on 25/12/18, Bolshevik warships sailed from Kronstadt to repel them. After mishaps, however, only two destroyers, `Spartak' and `Avtroil' eventually went ahead. The Spartak (with Raskolnikov, the Bolshevik Naval Commissioner, on board) made contact with the British Squadron the next day and was pursued, stranded and captured. The Avtroil, sailing behind, was captured the day after. Page 254 Regarding the Allied evacuation from Odessa on the Black Sea coast: On 4/4/19 HMS Caradoc and HMS Skirmisher (a sloop) entered the port of Odessa to support the evacuation of soldiers and civilians. The town was in the hands of the Bolsheviks by the evening of 5/4/19, although allied warships remained off the coast for some days to try to pick up any further fugitives. ................................................................................ ......................................................................
