Remembered Today:

Role of Paymaster

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me what the role of the Paymaster on board ship would be. Would there be an additional duties while in battle?

This is in connection with William Dowdell who was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve and served on board ship during the battle of Jutland, and was on the Zeebrugge and Ostend raids.

Thanks

John

John,

What did a Ships Paymaster do?

He must prove he has kept and rendered a ledger, including abstract and summary, for two complete quarters.

Ledger and ship’s office work also pay and cash accounts, receipt and custody of cash,

General knowledge of foreign currencies and exchanges, also of Bills of Exchange.

Naval Discipline Act and Courts – martial procedure

General knowledge of the Kings Regulations and of the various other books of Instructions.

International law and Merchant Shipping Acts

Competent in a Foreign language

He would be the Head of Department equivalent to the Rank of Major, his war station would only be determined by the ships Current Watch and Quarter bill. But could be compiling the Battle Narrative or ensuring First aid and food was available.

In effect he could be attached to assist in any of the non-fighting activities during action stations, eg fire fighting, food supply or medical (as Charles suggested).

Best wishes

David
