clive_hughes Posted 7 May , 2007 Share Posted 7 May , 2007 Hi folks, An (Australian) friend of mine has just shown me a small metal button he found some years ago at Gallipoli. Is it possible to identify it please? It is a tiny 1-piece ?brass, 4-hole button, diameter 3/4 of an inch (1.7 cm) Stamped around the edge "COMMONWEALTH" and a ?Crown To me. it looks like a trouser or shirt button; but whether this is so, and to what part of the UK/Australian/New Zealand forces it might belong, I leave to the experts. Many thanks in anticipation, LST_164
alliekiwi Posted 7 May , 2007 Share Posted 7 May , 2007 Sounds like an Australian button to me - "Commonwealth of Australia". Although it looks to be from a uniform made pre-Great war? If I'm reading correctly. Have a look at digger history for some examples. Allie

clive_hughes Posted 7 May , 2007 Author Share Posted 7 May , 2007 Hi Allie & jhon, yes, it looks exactly like the "Commonwealth" type of the 2 small pierced buttons shown on the Digger History site you give (except it has gone a bit green, so is probably brass not steel). Given this, and the dimensions, is there any further likelihood of discovering its use (shirt, trouser, etc)? Will ask my friend about the exact location, if he remembers it. Thank you, LST_164
