centurion Posted 29 April , 2007 Share Posted 29 April , 2007 I'm trying to trace details of one of my great uncles who served as a merchant navy skipper and had two ships sunk by U boat. The details I have are as follows. His surname was Kirby. He served in the Army in the Boer War having volunteered. He came from Boston Lincs. According to what my my grandmother told me he had had experience in sail as well as steam. His first command, a steamer, was sunk by U boat on its first outward trip under his captaincy (possihbly bound from Liverpool). His second command was also sunk by a U boat , he survived this (although my grandmother commented that "he became a bit anti German after that"). He finally ended up some time after WW1 as the harbour master of a South American port (possibly Valpariso) before finally retiring to live with his elder brother and family on a ranch in Patagonia. If any one can point me at where I might find out more please do so.
