stevenbecker Posted 25 April , 2007 Share Posted 25 April , 2007 Mates, Can anyone tell me or know how to confirm either the casulties of the 15th Sikhs during Dec 1915 to Jan 1916 in Egypt or their deaths. Is there a history for this unit to confirm this. Cheers S.B

stevenbecker Posted 29 April , 2007 Author Share Posted 29 April , 2007 Bill, Thanks there must be a few more as the figures don't much the numbers given in reports. I tried the CWGC Site but they don't give deaths by date and you need a name anyway. I was hopeing someone knew how to check Indian records? Cheers S.B
Guest Bill Woerlee Posted 30 April , 2007 Share Posted 30 April , 2007 Steve G'day mate Searching the CWGC is not as difficult as you think. Depends on the questions you ask. In the case of the Indians, it is made easier by the total number of casualties. If you go to the search page, for surname, just type in "a", then for years choose both as 1915. Then choose Army, then choose India. After that it is a matter of doing a search through the records to find the correct date for the 15th ... to do that the easy way requires a word seach on each the page. I used 15th and found those three above just to test the theory. Works like a dream. Mate, if you have any problems, just give me a call and I'll talk you through it. Esskay Posted 30 April , 2007 Share Posted 30 April , 2007 Some letters work fine for this Bill - but if you use for example "b" or "s" (just two I picked at random) - you get over 1000 possibilities - and it doesn't list them - just tells you to narrow your search BTW - I have found once you have the first page of your possibilities - instead of looking through each page - you can do a "sort" by clicking on any of the options across the top - eg Rank/Date of Death/Regiment/Cemetery/Memorial - and the pages convert to alphabetical or numerical listings based on your sort selection for that and all the ongoing pages Numerical isn't strict when used for Regiments though - seems to go on order of numbers - eg: with these Indian Regiments - 119th Indian Infantry (Mooltan Regiment) comes before 11th King Edward's Own Lancers (Probyn's Horse) which comes before 11th Rajputs which is then followed by 120th Rajputana Infantry but they end up grouped together and are easier to find Hope I've explained that clearly - not sure reading it through again - but it certainly does help Cheers Sue
Guest Bill Woerlee Posted 30 April , 2007 Share Posted 30 April , 2007 Sue G'day Yeah, good call on the B and S letters. I omitted to mention that I got around that by adding an additional vowel - eg - ba, be, bi etc. without forgetting the h. Cuts down the numbes and allows the results. I like the idea of sorting - good suggestion. Cheers Bill
Guest Bill Woerlee Posted 30 April , 2007 Share Posted 30 April , 2007 Steve G'day mate These are the only fellows I can find: 808 Sepoy BAKHTAWAR SINGH, 15th Ludhiana Sikhs, KIA 13 December 1915 1048 Sepoy BHAGAT SINGH, 15th Ludhiana Sikhs, KIA 13 December 1915 33 Sepoy SUNDAR SINGH, 15th Ludhiana Sikhs, KIA 13 December 1915 360 Naik BHAGWAN SINGH, 15th Ludhiana Sikhs, KIA 25 December 1915 56 Sepoy HARDATT SINGH, 15th Ludhiana Sikhs, KIA 25 December 1915 796 Sepoy SOHAN SINGH, 15th Ludhiana Sikhs, KIA 25 December 1915 The one thing I learned about Ludhiana - the first Indian city where I commenced import/export work so it has fond memories to me - the most reliable name is Singh. Just about everyone has that as a name. It's like Park in Korea. Well there are six out of six in this list. Cheers Bill
