Mystery pre WW1 uniform of man who served in WW1

Anybody any ideas of this uniform pre-WW1? Thanks Mark Potts

The dark uniform Austrian knot on the cuff, whistle, chain, lion head boss and bandsmans wings indicate a member of a pre-1908 Volunteer Band and the fact he appears to be wearing four inverted chevrons, with badge above, a sword and possibly silver lace on the collar and cuff would make him a bugle or drum major. The badge above the four inverted chevrons is difficult to identify precisely, but it would be either crossed bugles or drum for that rank

He's wearing collar badges which are easy to identify either, but they do have a look like a dragon and so could be Monthmouthshire Regiment. A close up of the collars would be welcome in an effort to try and identify the unit.

As Graham says, he’s part of a volunteer battalions music ensemble (band and bugles).  With rifle volunteer lineage he’s a Bugle Major.  The collar badges are Chinese dragons of the Royal Berkshire Regiment (hence dark blue facings).  As was common when the field service cap that he wears was first issued, the insignia worn with it is also a collar badge.  We know from that fact that the photo dates from around 1897 at the latest.
